Remembering 2 PAC

Who was 2PAC? Do you remember? The rapper, tragically murdered in Las Vegas in 1996, that’s true. Today we’ll delve a little ‘the figure of this extraordinary artist who simply define a rapper, it would be quite an understatement as 2 PAC was and still is today, twenty years after his death a great communicator, an American icon outside the preconceived ideas of the society, keen observer, scholar of the habit, we might say activist, socially engaged, that’s why like it or not also those who are not lovers of some kind of hip hop music, but music enthusiastic, know and estimate 2 PAC. His life was like a brilliant comet across the sky, indeed brilliant, blinding, lived up to the limit in the first part, but more sober and reflective in the second. I do not want to bore you presenting the same warmed old soup so I will not tell you why he chose the name of 2 PAC or where its derive, neither I will focus citing his albums, and millions of copies sold, nor I will speak of his alter I ego, Makaveli, but I would like to highlight another aspect of this artist and that is the social one. 2 PAC (aka Makaveli), represented in the African-American culture a true icon a feeder a sort of metropolitan prophet who with his words managed to escape the confines of hip hop and get to the whole American society culture. How did he made ? Surely with the superbly crafted melodies, but especially with great lyrics condensed not only his lifestyle that, as we said, initially, was voted to self-destruction, in the violent world of street gangs, but then it became mature but condemning, but never deny him, just that style of life that was a real cancer to eradicate a scourge in society who corrupted young African Americans. 2 PAC was the living example of one who was born poor, came from the ghetto had arrived to the achievement of the status of megastar, then wealth, fame, women, built through an image that fuels violence and to always live on the edge, with only the interest of making money, telling about shootouts between gangs. Why then change an image that was a gold mine for him and his producers? Why not give the audience what they wanted? Because the PAC was different, unique, and understood that he must come to terms with his demons and defeat them as a model for many and therefore his responsibility was too strong and important. So he changed his mind, denouncing just what he considered an example to follow, accusing. In doing so he became not just a singer but a communicator who warned young people against certain style of deceptive life, apparently pleasant but highly dangerous, self-destructive, that attracted the human being into a hellish fire and burned him just like the moth burns when approaching the flame. So then many African Americans, not just kids, that had so much hate inside them for a lifetime, often relegated to schemes of the American society and therefore forced them to be discontented and rebellious, listening PAC, understood, or began to understand something deeper, something none had told them before or perhaps too complicated or tedious to study in a book on a school desk. PAC then, just like a modern Martin Luther King, with his strong charisma and an ascending on young people who listened to him, first through the melodies of his songs, then like everyone else, even focusing on the lyrics, spoke them in a more subtle and acute way, urging them to look at the pre-established society as something to be deeply analyzed in order to understand the good and the bad and also making them understand that resorting to violence and weapons, not only would not solve anything and called more violence, but would bring them to do just the game that certain system had created for them, subordinating them even more. 2 PAC therefore strongly condemned the style of the gangster life, but specifically the violence of those who, relegated to an hopeless life were angry, but pointing the finger at the system and say to those who wanted to change it with the gun in a hand, that doing so would made them even more slaves of this system and would do its game just like a pawn on the chessboard. That’s why 2 PAC was unique and inimitable that’s why his concerts were full of African Americans, Hispanics, Caucasians, Asians and all races, because the word of 2 PAC was universal and transcends race or skin color, just like music and art in general. Sadly PAC was gone prematurely. Sometime I listen PAC in particular through the masterpiece that he brought out in 1995 entitled “Me Against The World” his magnum opus according to many and also according to me. In that album there is all about PAC, starting with “Dear Mama”, a song in which PAC remembers his mother and thanked her for all she has done for him, educating him to stay away from the street and also in poverty making miracles for him to spend a nice thanksgiving to “so Many Tears” where PAC mourning for his friends that’s gone and for a color or taken away by a drive by of an AK 47. We miss ya 2 PAC, you had so much more to say. But we want to remind you with a phrase that you mom used to say to you:
“If you cannot find something to live for, you better find something to die for”

Chi era 2 PAC ? Ve lo ricordate ? Il cantante rap, tragicamente assassinato a Las Vegas nel 1996, si, proprio lui. Oggi vedremo di approfondire un po’ la figura di questo straordinario artista che definire semplicemente un rapper, sarebbe alquanto riduttivo in quanto 2 PAC era ed è ancora oggi a vent’anni dalla sua morte un grande comunicatore, un’icona americana fuori dagli schemi precostituiti della società, acuto osservatore e studioso del costume, attivista potremmo dire, impegnato socialmente, ecco perché volenti o nolenti anche coloro che non sono amanti di certo genere di musica hip hop, ma che seguono la musica, conoscono e stimano 2 PAC. La sua vita è stata come una fulgida cometa che solca il cielo, brillante anzi, accecante, vissuta al massimo ed estrema nella prima parte, ma più pacata e riflessiva nella seconda. Non vi voglio tediare, presentandovi la solita minestra riscaldata e quindi non vi dirò perché scelse questo nome d’arte o da dove derivi, come non mi soffermerò citando i suoi album, ed i milioni di copie che vendettero e nemmeno vi parlerò del suo alter ego, Makaveli, ma vorrei mettere in evidenza un altro aspetto di questo artista e cioè quello sociale. 2 PAC ( alias Makaveli ), ha rappresentato nella cultura afro-americana una vera e propria icona un trascinatore una sorta di profeta metropolitano che con le sue parole è riuscito ad uscire dai confini della cultura hip hop ed arrivare a tutta la società americana. Come vi è riuscito ? Sicuramente con delle melodie di pregevole fattura, ma soprattutto con dei testi unici che condensavano non solo il suo stile di vita che, come abbiamo detto, in un inizio, era votato all’autodistruzione, nel violento mondo delle gangs, ma che poi divenne maturo, ma condannando, senza mai però rinnegarlo, proprio quello stile di vita che era un vero e proprio cancro da estirpare nella società una piaga che corrompeva i giovani afro americani. 2 PAC era l’esempio vivente di colui che nato povero, venuto dal ghetto era arrivato al raggiungimento dello status di megastar, quindi ricchezza, fama, donne, attraverso un’immagine costruita che fomentava alla violenza ed al vivere sempre al limite, solamente con l’interesse di fare soldi, narrando di sparatorie tra gangs. Perchè quindi cambiare un’immagine che era una miniera d’oro per lui e per i suoi produttori ? Perchè non dare al pubblico quello che voleva ? Perchè PAC era diverso, unico e comprese che doveva fare i conti con i suoi demoni e sconfiggerli in quanto modello per tanti e quindi la sua responsabilità era troppo forte ed importante. Corresse allora il tito denunciando proprio quello che lui considerava un esempio da seguire, auto accusandosi. Così facendo diventò una voce fuori dal coro, un cantore ed un comunicatore che metteva in guardia da certo stile di vita ingannevole, apparentemente piacevole, ma altamente pericoloso, autodistruttivo, che attirava l’essere umano verso un fuoco infernale e lo bruciava, proprio come la falena si brucia quando si avvicina alla fiamma. Ecco che allora tanti afro americani, non solo ragazzini, che avevano tanto odio in corpo per una vita, spesso relegata a schemi che la società americana gli imponeva e perciò scontenti e ribelli, ascoltando PAC, capirono o iniziarono a capire qualcosa di più profondo, qualcosa che nessuno gli aveva detto o forse, troppo complicato o tedioso da studiare in un libro su un banco di scuola. PAC allora, quasi come un Martin Luther King, avendo dalla sua un carisma fortissimo ed un ascendente sui giovani che lo ascoltavano, prima attraverso le melodie delle sue canzoni, poi come fanno tutti, soffermandosi anche sui testi, parlò loro in un modo più sottile ed acuto, spronandoli a guardare alla società precostituita come a qualcosa da analizzare profondamente per poter capire il bene ed il male ed anche facendogli capire che, ricorrendo alla violenza ed alla armi, non solo non avrebbero risolto nulla e chiamato altra violenza, ma avrebbero fatto proprio il gioco che certo sistema aveva architettato per loro, asservendoli ancor di più. 2 PAC quindi condannò fortemente lo stile di vita del gangster ma non di per se la violenza di coloro che, relegati ed una vita senza speranza erano arrabbiati, ma puntando il dito contro il sistema e dicendo a coloro che lo volevano cambiare con la pistola in mano, che così facendo sarebbero stati ancor più schiavi di questo sistema ed avrebbero fatto il suo gioco a mo di una pedina sulla scacchiera. Ecco perché 2 PAC è stato unico ed inimitabile ed ecco perché ai suoi concerti vedevi afro americani, ispanici, caucasici, asiatici e tutte le razze, proprio perché la parola di 2 PAC era universale e trascendeva la razza o il colore della pelle, proprio come la musica e l’arte in genere. Peccato se ne sia andato prematuramente PAC, peccato davvero. Ogni tanto me lo ascolto PAC soprattutto attraverso quel capolavoro che fece uscire nel 1995 intitolato “ Me Against The World “ la sua opera magna secondo molti ed anche secondo il sottoscritto. In quell’album c’è tutto di PAC, inziando con “Dear Mama”, brano in cui PAC ricorda la sua mamma e la ringrazia per tutto quello che ha fatto per lui, educandolo a stare lontano dalla strada ed anche nella povertà facendo miracoli per fargli passare un bel giorno del ringraziamento fino a “So Many Tears” dove piange i suoi amici che per un colore se ne sono andati, portati via da una raffica di mitra AK 47. Ci manchi 2 PAC, avevi ancora tanto da dire. Ma vogliamo ricordarti con una frase che ti diceva sempre la tua mamma :

” If you can’t find somethin’ to live for, you best find somethin’ to die for ”
